MINI RESEARCH: EFFECT OF SPROUT GROWTH ON DIFFERENT WATER SOURCE USERS (RAINWATER, WELL WATER AND MINERAL WATER)

 Did you know that not all water has the same effect on plant growth? Although it looks clear and clean, water from wells, rain, and bottled water can have very different effects on the growth of sprouts. Through a simple experiment with mung bean seeds, we can see firsthand how different water sources affect the speed and quality of plant growth. Let's see the results!

This experiment is very easy and can be done at home. First, put the same amount of cotton into several plastic cups. Then, add the same amount of mung bean seeds to each cup. After that, wet the cotton using three different types of water: well water, rainwater, and mineral water. Observe and record the development of the sprouts every day, such as when they start to grow, how long they are, and how many seeds have successfully germinated.

The experiment began on the first day, and as expected, there were no signs of sprouting in any of the treatments. However, things started to change on the second day. The seeds that were watered with rainwater started to show signs of life—small roots were growing, about 1.5 cm long. The well water also showed some growth, although the sprouts were fewer in number and only 1.2 cm long. Interestingly, the sprouts that were watered with mineral water appeared to grow more evenly, although they were only 1 cm long.

On the third day, the rainwater sprouts continued to grow with healthy white roots that were 3 cm long. The well water was surprising because it produced longer sprouts, up to 5 cm, although some began to appear discolored. The mineral water grew slower, only about 4 cm, and the number of sprouts was smaller.

The fourth day began to show a clear difference. The rainwater sprouts grew the tallest and looked freshest with an average length of 9 cm for 8 sprouts. Well water showed similar growth in length, but only for 6 sprouts. Meanwhile, mineral water was far behind, with a length of 5 cm for only 4 sprouts.

Entering the fifth day, well water began to show its superiority. The sprouts that were watered with this water grew evenly and looked fresh with leaves that were starting to turn green. Their height was also quite impressive, reaching 20 cm for 9 sprouts. Rainwater also remained stable in supporting growth, with sturdy stems and leaves that were starting to increase, although the height was slightly shorter, namely 17 cm for 9 sprouts. Meanwhile, mineral water showed uneven growth. Some sprouts did grow quite long, up to 16 cm, but the stems looked limp and the leaves began to turn yellow—a sign that their growth was not optimal.

On the sixth day, the advantages of well water became clearer. The sprouts grew most fertile with a maximum length of 23 cm and the largest number, namely 10 sprouts that looked healthy and their leaves began to open. Rainwater was still good, with a height of 17 cm on 9 sprouts, and its appearance remained fresh. In contrast, mineral water, although it produced one sprout with a length of 20 cm, but the rest grew weakly, had small leaves, and looked unhealthy.

After six days of experimentation, it turned out that well water was the best for growing mung bean sprouts. The sprouts grew tall, had many leaves, and looked healthy. Rainwater was also quite good, especially at the beginning of growth, but slowed down a bit towards the end. Meanwhile, mineral water was the least suitable—the sprouts grew unevenly, the stems were limp, and the leaves were small or yellowed.

So, if you want to grow sprouts at home, use well water or rainwater for the best results. Mineral water? Better to just drink it!
